Description: Automated Systems is the primary responsibility of this position. This includes all aspects
of automation, data communications, LAN, WAN, dial-in and Internet connectivity. Responsible for
the system-wide budget in excess of $5 Million. Supervise 20+ FTEs in three separate departments
(Tech Services, Collection Development, and Automation) Extensive experience in budgeting procedures,
local government financing, data communications, systems design and procurement, and installation.
Major Accomplishments:
- Implemented three major computer systems (Geac:1983, Dynix: 1993, Sirsi: 2004) from earliest stages of investigation to functional systems.
- Implemented first home dial-in to the On-line Catalog in the State (1986).
- Planned and implemented microcomputer support program and local area networks (Novell & Microsoft). Implemented wide area network Ethernet system for 300 PCs via Frame Relay utilizing routing technology and T-1 lines, and fiber optic.
- Wrote and implemented all administrative software programs, including major accounting program used by several other library districts.
- Managed the library's web presence from 1995, including several re-designs.
- Implemented Internet connection and integration into local UNIX/Novell/Windows environment.
- Envisioned LinkNet as a major service offering. Acquired funding and directed the project from concept through implementation and running. The library was the largest ISP in the county and the largest library-supported ISP in the world.
- Extensive experience in written material (RFPs, grant applications, etc.), oral presentations, staff committee work, and contract negotiations with vendors. Extensive experience in hardware and software maintenance and policy issues.

Position: Assistant to the Director
Dates: 1981-1986
Description: System wide responsibilities for administration of library. Included business manager and personnel manager
functions of tracking and formulating budget, facilities management, and contract
administration. Manager for several LSCA/LSTA grants.
Major Accomplishments
- Implemented system wide personnel reorganization and salary plan.
- Managed staff input and wrote two complete revisions to the Staff Manual governing personnel conduct, benefits.
- Implemented first-ever computer functions for management in budget tracking, personnel and payroll functions.
- Managed major contracts for building energy management and telecommunications systems, including preparing RFPs.
- Responsible for major research in cost and planning for automation.
- Wrote system-specific documentation for automation and was responsible for staff training.
Organization: Zimmerman and Associates
Position: Information Systems Analyst
Dates: 1980-1981
Description: Primarily documentation support for the Trident submarine program located at Bangor, Washington. Involved
systems analysis duties at both Trident Training Facility (TTF) and Trident Refit Facility (TRF). Zimmerman worked through NAVSEA. Secret Clearance.

Position: Adult Services Librarian
Dates: 1977-1980
Description: Manager of Central Library circulation and paging operations, building management, and public relations support group.
Responsible for adult programming.
Major Accomplishments
- Managed move of 150,000 books and 100 employees into new 36,000 square foot facility from several locations.
- Supervised 20+ employees in three departments.
- Spearheaded public relations campaign leading to a successful tax levy election.
- Directed three Computer Fairs for the County, first of their kind, introducing microcomputers to the populace.
- Published county-wide newsletter on library operations.

Description: This is a sole-proprietorship serving as an umbrella for writing and consulting
activities. A complete list of publications is listed separately. Some activities in this arena have been:
- Automation consultant to Longview Public Library, Longview, WA.
- Consultant on newspaper indexing alternatives to a library consortium.
- Developed and instructed several courses in library automation and taught courses from Tacoma to Minnesota.
- Established, wrote, and published The Systems Librarian and Automation Review newsletter.
- Served as co-editor of Library Workstation Report, renamed Academic and Library Computing.
- Served as Associate Editor of Computers in Libraries magazine after selling Systems Librarian to Meckler Corporation.
- Served as Lead Columnist of Computers in Libraries magazine while writing “View from the Top Left Corner” (top left of the USA, as in Washington State) after the magazine was sold to Information Today, Inc.
